The Board of Directors of the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University recently announced the names of the eleven composers selected to receive 1999 Fromm commissions. The eleven composers who received commissions are: Chester Biscardi (New York, NY); Ronald Caltabiano (San Francisco, CA); Brian Fennelly (Kingston, NY); Shirish Korde (Cambridge, MA); Jorge Liderman (Berkeley, CA); David Lipten (Durham, CA); Jeffrey Mumford (Washington, DC); Wayne Peterson (San Francisco, CA); Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez (San Francisco, CA); Laura Elise Schwendinger (Chicago, IL); Barbara White (Princeton, NJ).

These commissions represent one of the principal ways that the Fromm Music Foundation seeks to strengthen composition by bringing contemporary concert music closer to the public. In addition to the commissioning fee, a subsidy is also available for the ensemble performing the premiere of the commissioned work. Among a number of other projects, the Fromm Music Foundation also sponsors the annual Fromm Contemporary Music Series at Harvard and supports the Festival of Contemporary Music at Tanglewood.
