During his Music Alive residency, composer Osvaldo Golijov will work closely with the Los Angeles Philharmonic musicians and artistic staff on the preparation of his new suite from The Passion According to St. Mark. Because Mr. Golijov has lived in Argentina and Jerusalem and has a strong connection to the music of those countries, the Los Angeles Philharmonic aims to strengthen its commitment to ethnic diversity within Los Angeles' large multi-cultural population through his residency, with emphasis on its Latino and Jewish communities. In addition, Mr. Golijov will make public appearances throughout the whole Los Angeles community, including pre-concert discussions, dialogues at colleges and conservatories, and workshops for community organizations.

Mr. Golijov immigrated to the United States in 1986, where he earned his Ph.D. under George Crumb at the University of Pennsylvania. A past winner of the Koussevitzky Composition Prize, Mr. Golijov has more recently won France's Diapason D'Or (1997), the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's Stoeger Prize for Contemporary Music (1996), and the Kennedy Center's Friedheim Awards (in 1993 and again in 1995). In addition to his suite from The Passion According to St. Mark, which will commemorate the 250th anniversary of J.S. Bach's death, other upcoming premieres include works written for the Kronos Quartet, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a violin concerto for Pamela Frank and the Minnesota Orchestra, and the soundtrack for a new Sally Potter film starring Johnny Depp and Cate Blanchett.
